Why are people afraid of wolves?

We humans are a species that tells stories, these stories mark our culture, our emotions, our relations, our religions our psychology. Depending on what story you were told or you believe in your perspective of things in general and of the wolf in particular will definitely change.

Now imagine a world about 20.000 years ago when the world was a gigantic Serengeti full of animals with no cities, no borders when everyone was living in small communities living from hunting and gathering. Those people were living in complete freedom and connection with nature, there was no sense of property or ownership. Animals were fundamental for survival and prized for their qualities, no wonder that the stories at that time were that the wolf was a great social hunter (like us), a totemic animal to learn from and to imitate, respected and powerful.

10.000 years ago it started a dramatic change in human culture and with the stories we were told. We became agro-pastoralists, for those people the relation with nature was still on daily basis but the emotions were different. Possession of land, crops and animals gave those people a sense of property and everything that was breaking this bond or affecting it was considered negative. A pack of wild wolves killing the goats of the shepherd was not a positive input into the daily life so the story changed.

Around 5000 years ago the Abrahamic religions (Judaism, Christianity and Islam), born from a agro-pastoralist society that started to be more complex with cities and commerce made a step further away from nature and institutionalized the main agro-pastoralist sentiment about nature, that was something to be owned, to be tame. Something that was impossible to own or tame became in the main story the incarnation of the Devil, something against the image of the perfect divine world.

Still based on this story we became more and more complex and with this further and further away from nature. We started what we call the industrial world, a world where everything is business, property to buy or sell. Nature has no space in this world beside of being a commodity. What is the story in this world about the wolf?! A distant disturbance that urge to eradicate, to step away from the glorious march of progress!

In the XXI century when the world is crowded with billions of people living mostly in huge urban or suburban areas where most people never had contact with real nature not even a single time in their lives.
The stories will come mainly from the media, films, magazines and TV news done by people that equally never had in their lives real contact with nature. The perception will be highly distorted and polarized in two extremes, or the highly romantic and favourable or the highly antagonistic and negative and this is the story we are living now.

Native Americans had one story about our psychology. That is divided in two wolves, the dark, demoniac, terrible monster wolf that would feed on fear, and the light wolf, free, wise, powerful and a great teacher from whom we can learn from. Which of the two wolves you decide to feed in your brain is up to you to decide.

My story in neither romantic, neither antagonistic, it’s just to see nature as it is, a complex, amazing system full of organisms that just like we, want to live, to be strong, healthy, happy and free.

Let’s create a new better story together!
