THE RUT (mammalian reproduction)

What is it?

The rut is a special period in the life of deer, when males (bulls) compete for the favours of females (doe). In Poland, it takes place in early autumn, usually from mid-September to early October. It is a spectacular spectacle of nature, during which the loud roars of bulls can be heard as an expression of their strength and dominance. The sounds reverberate for miles, with the aim of scaring off rivals and attracting doe. It is an exciting time, both for the deer themselves and for wildlife watchers.

When is the rut season?

The rut season usually begins in mid-September and lasts until the first days of October. This period may vary slightly depending on the region and weather conditions. In colder years, the roaring season may start earlier and in warmer years a little later. The key point, however, is that the most intense roars can be heard at night and at dawn, when the bull deer are most active.

How do you prepare for it?

Preparing for a rut requires proper planning. First of all, it is a good idea to stock up on warm and comfortable clothing, as the roaring takes place on cool autumn mornings and evenings. It is also a good idea to bring binoculars and a camera with a long lens to observe and capture these amazing moments from a safe distance. It is also essential to remain quiet and calm so as not to frighten the animals away. Sometimes you may want to consider hiring a guide who knows the area and the deer’s habits, which
increases the chances of successful sightings.

Where to look for deer during the rut?

There are many places in Poland where deer roaring can be successfully observed. Among the most interesting are:

  1. Biebrza National Park – The vast marshes and forests of the Biebrza River are one of the best places to observe wildlife, including deer roaring.
  2. Tatra Mountains – Although the mountains are more associated with chamois, deer can also be seen in the Tatras, especially on less frequented trails.
  3. Bialowieza Forest – This is one of the last primeval forests in Europe, where deer feel at home.
  4. Borecka Forest – A lesser-known but equally charming place, where the roaring takes place in the surroundings of the beautiful Masurian forests.
