I’s been five years since I gave an interview to Onet Morning. The conversation was about the role of rivers in our ecosystem and their importance to humans. I think the topic is very timely and worth revisiting. Let’s remember that protecting rivers is an investment in our future and the future of future generations.
Water flowing in rivers is the primary source of life for countless organisms, from microorganisms to large mammals. Rivers provide essential nutrients, are breeding grounds for many species of fish, and are a key component of terrestrial ecosystems, irrigating farmland and forests.
A river is an integral part of the ecosystems through which it flows connecting them to each other – from mountain springs to estuaries to the seas. Water carries with it not only water, but also nutrients, which are crucial for the plants and animals that inhabit these areas.
“A river is like an artery of blood in the body – it transports essential nutrients and cleanses the body.”
Rivers have always been crucial to the development of human civilizations. They provide drinking water, are a source of food, and enable transportation and communication. It is important to understand and respect rivers in the context of sustainable development.
“We can’t treat rivers like sewage into which we dump waste. We must protect and care for them, because our survival depends on it.”
A very important issue is monitoring and reducing pollution in rivers. Pollution has a disastrous impact on aquatic ecosystems and human health. It is worth investing in water purification technologies and educating the public about the importance of clean rivers.
Rivers help regulate temperature and humidity, which has a direct impact on local and global climate.
“Protecting rivers is also protecting the climate. We need to understand that everything is interconnected.”
Rivers are not just a watercourse, but a host on many levels, playing a key role in ecosystems and human life. We must keep them clean and healthy so that they can continue to perform their irreplaceable functions.
