wolves tracking

The rules are simple: no work, no duties, only wolves, mountains and adventure! We will search, sniff and track. Light fires and howl at wolves. Wander the backwoods where it’s easier to meet wolves than people, and sleep in a place where it’s easier to hear them howling than the sounds of the city.

Sitting on the veranda of our farmhouse, I heard wolves howling several times, and a kilometer from the house I met a wolf three times. It was one of the most wonderful natural experiences of my life.

What are we going to do?

  • we will go to the forest to track wolves
  • we will look for tracks and learn to distinguish between tracks left by wolves and dogs
  • night howl – we will go out at night to call wolves
  • on the second day, we will go out to track bison
  • do wolves attack humans? – you will find out if they really threaten us
  • we will learn how to pack and dress for the field

Won’t the wolves attack us? There is nothing to be afraid of. A healthy, untamed wolf will not attack a human.

WHERE?

Agritourism Uroczysko Sosnówka

WHO WILL LEAD?

LUKAS DłUGOWSKI

In Chile I was a fisherman, in Patagonia I almost became a gaucho, in Finland I roamed the swamps of distant Lapland picking Nordic raspberries. I am genetically addicted to unpopular and off-trail places.

Joao
Ferro

As an 11-year-old, he first learned about the existence of the Białowieża Forest from the WWF magazine. He dreamed then to come to Poland and see the Forest with his own eyes. The road was winding: first he became a paratrooper in the special forces of Portugal, then he worked in a rehabilitation center for wolves, went to a corporation in Poland, and finally dropped everything and moved to Białowieża. He married a Polish painter, Basia Bańka, with whom they live in Białowieża. Every morning he takes cold baths in Narewka and then goes to the Forest.

how was it?

Poland is a country of wolves. From a population that has reduced to about 70 animals in the 1970s, it is now nearly 2000. Four packs are permanently present in the Białowieża Forest – the last primeval wood in Europe. The largest pack, living near the town of Białowieża, has up to 16 wolves!

In turn, the Borecka Forest (Masury region) is a woodland where two packs live. One has from 8 to 14 individuals, the other is still under research. The wood is small, but you can find relics of the primeval forest there, e.g. in the form of unique structure, mosses, lichens and birds.

If you live in the villages near woods, you share the same territory with wolves. In the evenings you might hear wolves howling, and while walking along the trails you can meet them or find their tracks. Wolves really are everywhere here!

  • if you’ll stay longer with us – we will go out to track bisons

GUIDE

Monika Żłobin-Kozak

Monika is a certified guide in Białowieża forest and a local in fourth generation. Her mother used to be a guide for over 20 years and her father works in the Białowieża NP.

She was raised in the northern part of the forest where she was roaming wild with her sibling.

For the last few years she has lived close to Białowieża village.

Ania Jarząbska

For over 10 years Ania has been living in the heart of the Białowieża Forest — a place that has become her home, her inspiration, and the space where she truly thrives.

Professionally, she is a forest educator. Every day she has the privilege of sharing knowledge about the forest, telling stories about its mysteries, and showing how much we can learn from nature.

And privately? She trains boxing — just like the Forest — teaches her calm and mindfulness. And when she returns from the woods… she sings. Sometimes still among the trees, sometimes already at home, but always with a soul full of sound.

She invites you into her world — filled with wolf howls, the grunts of European bison, and the scent of the ancient forest.
