Discover the Magic of the Biebrza Marshes

The Biebrza Marshes, located in northeastern Poland, is one of the most valuable natural places in Europe. The vast wetlands, meandering Biebrza River and abundance of flora and fauna attract nature lovers from all over the world. It is an ideal place for those who want to immerse themselves in wild nature and experience its beauty in an unspoiled form.

The Biebrza National Park, which encompasses the area, is the largest national park in Poland. The Marshes are home to many rare plant and animal species. Among them you can meet such treasures as the white-tailed eagle, black stork, wolves, moose and numerous species of water and marsh birds. It’s a real paradise for ornithologists – during spring and autumn migration, you can observe thousands of migratory birds and unique species such as:

  • White-tailed eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla) – One of the largest birds of prey in Europe. Characterized by its white tail and powerful beak.
  • Black stork (Ciconia nigra) – A rare and protected species, distinguished from the more familiar white stork. It has black plumage with a metallic sheen and a white belly.
  • Greater Spotted Eagle (Clanga clanga) – This is a rare bird of prey that nests in large, old trees in swamps. In Poland it is found mainly in the Biebrza Marshes.
  • Crane (Grus grus) – A large wading bird known for its distinctive loud noises. It can often be found in marshes, where it feeds and nests.
  • Dubelt (Gallinago media) – This is a small plover bird that is very difficult to spot due to its camouflaging plumage. It is one of the rarest birds in Poland.

Swamps, due to their extensive wetlands, forests and meadows, provide ideal habitat for elk. Moose prefer wet areas with an abundance of aquatic and marsh vegetation, which they feed on. That is the reason why the largest moose population in Poland occurs here.

Numerous hiking, biking and canoeing trails are available for visitors to explore this unique ecosystem. Particularly recommended are canoeing trips down the Biebrza River, which allow close contact with wildlife. You can also take a walk on wooden footbridges leading through the most valuable marsh areas. We highly recommend the “CARSKA DROGA” trail and the “RED BAGNO” educational path.

The Biebrza Marshes is a place where nature and culture meet, offering many unique events. Festivals and fairs attract tourists who want to experience the beauty of the region and its rich traditions. In our opinion, the most interesting local events are: Biebrza National Park Days, Biebrza Nature Fair, Biebrza Swamp Festival and Biebrza Ornithological Meetings.

A visit to the swamp is also an excellent opportunity for environmental education. TOTEMEXPEDITIONS offers guided tours that introduce visitors to the secrets of marsh life. It’s a place where you can learn respect for nature and understand the importance of preserving it for future generations.

The Biebrza Marshes are sure to leave an unforgettable impression. The wildlife, extraordinary landscapes and abundance of species will make anyone who visits this region want to come back. This is an ideal place to relax, get in touch with nature and discover the beauty of Polish landscapes.
